Alonso, first spaniard to win his home race

Alonso won the Spanish Grandprix infront of his home crowd at catalunya and also helped Renault extend their advantage in both driver’s and constructor’s championship along with his teammate Fisichella, who took the final podium position. Schumacher came second after clearly blocked by Fisichella untill the first round of pit stops and his teammate Massa came home in the fourth place.

At the start Alonso holds his lead from Fisi and Schumacher as the pack rush down to the first corner. Alonso takes 1.6 secs out of Fisi and 3.1 secs out of Schumi on the first lap alone. It looks like Alonso is on a light fuel load compared to the rest of the pack and he keeps going away from from Fisi and Schumi. Schumi responds with some quick sector times but Alonso slams fastest laps one after another and he is 4.3 secs ahead of Schumi by lap 3. It looks like Alonso gonna make an early pitstop with Fisi effectively holding up the pursuing Ferrari’s. Lap 12 and Alonso is still flying with 10.2 secs ahead of Schumi. The 4th placed Massa is 11.2 secs ahead of 5th placed Raikkonen by lap 14 which shows how strong the Renault and Ferrari are. Schumi makes another fastest first sector on lap 14 but Fisichella is clearly holding him off.

Damn! Ferrari mechanics are getting ready, but for which one?. No, they moved back in to the pits. Wats going on here. Ralf Schumacher collided with his team mate Trulli and lost part of his front wing. On lap 17 Renault mechanics are ready and Alonso pits from the lead, so did Ralf for repairs. Alonso rejoins ahead of Raikkonen and Schumacher is still trapped behind Fisi. Oh yes the Renault mechanics are ready for Fisi on lap 18th which allows Schumi to take the lead. He is lapping in low 1 min 18 secs till now and we will see how much pace he has now. Montoya spins and is out of the car and race which brings yellow flags. Ferrari mechanics are ready again and yes it for Massa who pits in on lap 19th. Schumi is lapping in low 1 min 17 secs now and is 11.6 secs ahead of Alonso which wont be enough to emerge ahead after his pitstop. Schumi slams fastest 3rd sector and first sector times while Alonso fights his way through traffic. Schumi is 13.4 secs ahead of ALonso by lap 22 and Raikkonen pits in from 3rd position. If Schumi manages to emerge ahead of Fisi atleast when he makes his pitstop, then he can fight for Victory. On lap 23, Ferrari are ready for Michael and he comes in from the lead and comes out in front of Fisichella. Wow thats really crucial for Ferrari and Schumi.

Now Michael can really go on and attack Alonso who no longer has his team mate to help defend his lead. By lap 25 Alonso’s lead over Schumi is just 10.3 secs while button remains the only frontrunner yet to stop. No drama in the next 5 laps and Schumi cuts the lead to 9.6 secs from Alonso. Now the 2nd round of pitstops are very crucial for Renault and Ferrari as they can decide the outcome of this race. Looks like Renault is ready for another round of pitstops. On lap 40 Alonso pits from the lead and rejoins just behind Fisi handing the lead to Schumi while Fisi pits in after Alonso. Massa slams the fastest lap in 3rd place on lap 42 while Schumi’s lead over Alonso is 9.6 secs. Can both Ferraris emerge infront of both Renaults when they pit?. Massa pits in on lap 43 and rejoins behind Fisichella. Damn it, Can Michael do it atleast?, lets see. 21 laps to go and Schumi is just 10.8 secs ahead of Alonso which won’t be enough for him to emerge infront of Alonso. On lap 46 Schumi pits in from the lead and so did Sato and Raikkonen. Schumi is 12.1 secs behind Alonso and Fisi 13.8 secs further behind with 17 laps to go. It looks like everyone is easing and the positions remain same at the front for the next 3 laps and they may remain till the end unless something spectacular happens. Renault is definetly not slower than Ferrari if not faster here at Spanish Grand Prix, Catalunya.

Damn the live timing screen gone haywire showing Michael Schumacher stopped and was a lap down to Alonso but Schumi is still running. I thought thats the spectacular thing I mentioned before but thanks to Ferrari, he is still running. Alonso lapped everyone upto 7th placed Barrichello. Three laps to go and it lloks like Spanish fans are going to get what they came for. Alonso begins his final lap and Renault mechanics rush to the pit wall.

Thats it, Alonso is already waving to the crowds and takes the flag to win his home Grandprix. Schumacher comes home in the second place with Fisichella third. Massa takes the fourth place with Raikkonen, Button, Barrichello and Hiedfeld complete the points. Fisichella is definetly the man who changed everything for Ferrari and its disgusting as Schumacher pointed this immediately after the qualifying yesterday. Lets wait and see how the teams do in the next 2 weeks of break befor the famous Monaco Grandprix on 28th May. #.
